Tangy. Spicy. Sweet. Unbeatable.
In addition to the delightful taste of dates, in its traditional avatar (form,) this chutney draws its tanginess from tamarind, and sweetness from jaggery, hence giving it a unique blend of three distinct flavors.
My globalized twist in the recipe below offers you a few choices, to help make this one-of-a-kind chutney a part of your meals:
- Try the authentic dipping sauce chutney with traditional ingredients.
- Or savor a western style chunky version of this spicy date chutney – made using the same flavors with chopped dates.
- As always, I’ve offered substitute ingredients, found in most kitchens, for tamarind and jaggery – use lime in place of tamarind, and regular or brown sugar can stand in for jaggery.
Alternately, try my chunky version of spicy date chutney as a spread for sandwiches and wraps like meat sliders, yogurt quesadilla and Kathi roll, as a topping on Daal Tadka or accompaniment to Tex-Mex Chili.
I’m sure you’ll soon find your own great ways to make this chutney a part of your meals.
